Mr. Ryan is a character in Season 1 of Dawson's Creek. He is portrayed by Ed Grady.


Gramps and Grams met during the war[1] and married in the early 1950s[2]. In his younger days, Mr. Ryan worked as an attorney. It unspecified, though implied that he is retired when he is seen in Season 1. In the Season 4 finale Coda, Grams and Jen are moving out of the house and Grams tells Jack and Jen how she and Mr. Ryan lived with his parents when they were first married, then in a little flat above his legal office in downtown Capeside.


  • Gramps only appears in Season 1, but is mentioned throughout the series.
  • Executive Producer Paul Stupin and Creator Kevin Williamson revealed at the 2015 ATX Festival that they cast Gramps as they were planning to have him wake from his coma for a few episodes before abruptly passing away, but could never find the right moment and ended up using the character much less[3].
  • In the original Pilot script, Gramps is mentioned to be 70 years of age[4]. His birthday is not specified.
